Things to Think About Before Installing New Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen remodeling projects typically entail ripping out old cabinets and installing new ones. Kitchen cabinets can make a world of difference in how a kitchen looks, feels and functions, so it is important that homeowners choose their new fixtures wisely. If you are about to undertake a kitchen renovation project and have yet to choose your cabinets, give careful consideration to the following three things before you make your final selection:

Finish

Kitchen cabinets come in a variety of finishes such as black, white, maple, cherry, oak, walnut, shiny, dull, matte and everything in between. Before you rip down your old cabinets, decide what finish you want, as you may be able to save yourself tens of thousands of dollars by simply refinishing your old fixtures.

Manufacturing Style

What your cabinets are made of and by what company will be indirectly dictated by your kitchen remodeling budget. Knock-down are the least expensive type of kitchen cabinets and can usually be taken directly from store to home and installed yourself. Stock cabinets are a little higher quality than KD and slightly more expensive; however, they’re mass produced and only available in a few finishes and styles. Semi-custom and custom cabinets are on the higher end of the price-spectrum and come in a variety of styles and finishes, and can be custom fit to the layout of your kitchen. They also come with more organizational options and accessories.

Door Styles

The style of door you choose all depends on the look you’re going for. Are you trying to achieve a country farm house look, a shabby-chic look or a sleek and modern look? A farm house kitchen might have chicken wire or clear glass doors while a contemporary kitchen might have frosted glass doors.

While your designer should be able to help you select the kitchen cabinets that will best fit your kitchen remodeling budget, desired style and needs, it doesn’t hurt to think about the above three things yourself. With an idea of the finish, manufacturing and door style in mind, finding the right cabinets for your new kitchen should not be too difficult.
